The town was founded by a group of pioneer families. It was named for the home of William Reid from Dundee, Scotland.

Fertile soil and benevolent weather contribute to the proliferation of vineyards and groves in the Dundee area. Plums, filberts and English walnuts are the major area crops. The town is in Yamhill County on Highway 99W.
